Newborn Session Guide

What to wear:

First and foremost, I recommend wearing something comfortable! Any clothing that you choose should work well with the movement that will take place during your session. We will be photographing you sitting, standing, and maybe even laying down! Mom’s can wear anything from a flowy top with leggings, to a long flowy dress. For dads, a t-shirt and jeans or a relaxed button up works great. I suggest a neutral, solid colored shirt, and to avoid busy patterns, bright colors, and words/logos that may distract from your new baby. Keep things simple and comfortable. That’s a good rule for siblings as well! Please don’t exactly match with your spouse, instead coordinate within the same color scheme.

Adding texture or layers can also be a fun way to liven up your look. Layering can be very flattering to a newly postpartum mama’s figure.

A white tee with a simple open front sweater is an example of a good layered choice. When it comes to footwear, most of the time bare feet look the most natural in a home setting. If you need additional help, I am just a text away!

To keep it simple, baby only needs to wear a diaper and have a swaddle available. A simple white onesie always works well too!

If there are any special hats, outfits, or other blankets that you would like to use, I am happy to incorporate those into some photos! If you choose an outfit for baby to wear, try to make sure that baby isn’t swimming in it. A cute bow, head wrap, bonnet, or little hat can also be a fun way to dress up baby a bit without going over the top.

If you desire, I will bring a few textured wraps and crates for a few posed shots as well. If we are in the studio, I will have all of that there already!

Before the session:

Give baby a feeding before I arrive so he/she is nice and sleepy.

Also, if the session is in your home, turn up the heat a bit so baby is nice and comfortable during un-swaddled photos.

After the session:

You will receive all of your photos in a private online gallery within 2 weeks (usually much sooner).

Frequently asked questions:

Q: When should we schedule our newborn session?

A: Most clients book their newborn session months before baby arrives. When baby does arrive, send me a text and expect to book your session within the next two weeks (the sooner the better).

Q: What if baby doesn’t arrive on their due date?

A: Most babies don’t arrive on their due date! I am prepared for early and late arrivals. Please notify me when your baby arrives so I can block off some time for your newborn session.
